The short version
The Stephen Sondheim sits on the footprint of the original 1918 Henry Miller's Theatre, but the auditorium that ticket-buyers actually walk into is a 2009 build by COOKFOX — most of the 1,055-seat house is below street level, which gives it tighter sight lines and a more compact feel than its neighbours of the same capacity. Roundabout-managed and renamed for Sondheim on the composer's 80th birthday in 2010, the room runs an orchestra plus a single mezzanine with no obstructive columns. Centre orchestra is the premium tier; front mezzanine has the best wide-angle on the pop-concert choreography, and the 'partial view' designations on the official seat map and lottery seats are usually genuine — confirm before booking.
Section by section
Sections are ordered roughly cheapest-to-most-expensive within the house's seating tiers — but the best value isn't always the cheapest. Watch for the sweet spot.
-
Orchestra
Centre orchestra is premium for proximity. Side orchestra rows can clip the corners of the upstage choreography.
-
Front Mezzanine
Best wide-angle view of the ensemble choreography. The consensus best-value pick at the Sondheim.
-
Rear Mezzanine
Furthest seats. Some 'partial view' designations are genuine — read the official seat map carefully before booking.
