Marquis Theatre

The Marquis Theatre is a 1,611-seat venue built inside the Marriott Marquis hotel complex, operated by the Nederlander Organization. It’s one of the newest Broadway houses, opened in 1986 as part of the West 46th Street redevelopment that replaced several earlier theatres demolished for the hotel project — a controversial preservation moment that produced the venue we have now.

For ticket-buyers the practical thing to know is that the Marquis is a modern-design auditorium: sight lines are unusually consistent across the orchestra and mezzanine (the engineered rake compensates for the height variations that older houses live with), and the seats themselves are full modern dimensions rather than the cramped pre-war scale of some landmark venues. The trade-off is the building’s commercial-hotel feel — lobbies and pre-show flow are functional rather than atmospheric. Stranger Things: The First Shadow is currently in residence.
