Lyric Theatre

The current Lyric Theatre was rebuilt in 1998 by Beyer Blinder Belle, combining the footprints of two earlier 42nd Street houses — the 1903 Lyric Theatre and the 1920 Apollo Theatre — that had both fallen into disrepair during the long decline of West 42nd Street. The reconstruction preserved key historical elements from both original venues while creating a single very large modern auditorium suited to spectacle-scale musical productions.

At 1,622 seats today, the Lyric is one of Broadway’s largest houses — though smaller than its original capacity. The auditorium was reconfigured in 2017 to host Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, with seats removed from the rear orchestra and balcony to install production-specific elements. The cumulative effect is a room engineered around a single resident production rather than a flexible Broadway booking — sight lines and acoustics are tuned for Harry Potter’s staging, and changes for a future tenant would require another reconfiguration.

The Lyric is operated by Ambassador Theatre Group, part of ATG’s seven-house Broadway portfolio — the Lyric and the Hudson, plus the five former Jujamcyn theatres ATG took a majority stake in during 2023.
